Puteri Gunung Ledang (The Malay Movie)

1. State one of the many Malay idioms (peribahasa) spoken in the film. What is the meaning of that idiom? How would you use it in real life? (hint: can and please google yeah)

Ans: At the beginning, Hang Tuah spoke that "Layar berbelok-belok, sauh dibungkar di tempat tenang". It means that is nothing can do because of missing something important. To further detail, it is tried explain that the boat will remain at the same location if there is no wind blows to the boat. If I use this in real life, I will use it in daily life. 2. During Raja Ahmad’s coronation, what was the item gifted to him by the Sultan? What is the reason such gift?

Ans:Raja Ahmad was gifted a dagger called 'keris' in Malay by Sultan. Since he is the son of Sultan, he is the one who take over the place of Sultan when his father is passed away one day. So, the 'keris' is actually a symbol for royal family.

3. Name Laksamana Tuah’s keris. In the film, what did Tuah ask the bendahara to return to the sultan?

4. In your best guess, what could be the basis of conflict between Majapahit and Demak? Do you see similar conflict still happening in present time Malaysia? Please elaborate.

Ans:For my guess, I think the basic conflict is the status right. For example, Majapahit was jealous Demak on some resources such as loots, man power and so on. So, Majapahit would attack Demak to make Demak to become one of their forces. Yes, I do see same conflict in Malaysia now. To explain this, it can back to the election when it was few years ago. Many people had thought that opposition was very sure to win for the election but some of unidentified votes came out and the opposition lost the election. Also, people believed that these 'dirty' votes were the connected to immigrants.

The Malacca Palace.

8. In one scene, Gusti Putri said “Saya ingin merdeka.” What did MERDEKA mean in the film then and in Malaysia now?

Ans: For the word 'MERDEKA', it is a term to describe something is set free. In the film, Gusti Putri used the word to express her opinion which she thinks that every person should have their own right to choose which person they love but not in the forcing way. However, 'MERDEKA' in Malaysia is meant for different freedom which we called it as independence.

9. Briefly tell us what is the most common narrative/story about Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat? (google and read up).

Ans:Hang Tuah was a strong warrior from Malacca. Also, he was admired by many people because of his loyalty to his country. One of most common story for him was the incident of Tun Teja, princess of Pahang. Originally, sultan sent Hang Tuah to persuade the marriage between her and the sultan. Unfortunately, Hang Tuah impressed the princess and she fall in love with him. Because of this, sultan decided to kill Hang Tuah who betrayed him. On the other hand, Hang Jebat was one of four warrior with Hang Tuah. He was given the 'keris' which owned by Hang Tuah after Hang Tuah's death. Due to the death, Hang Jebat planned to revenge on what had the sultan did. However, Hang Jebat not just revenge but he went crazy since he was so powerful. Then, Hang Tuah was called back to stop Hang Jebat and he succeeded to do it. Finally, Hang Jebat was killed by Hang Tuah and Hang Tuah got back his status like old time.

10. The Hang Tuah-Hang Jebat conflict captures the tension between loyalty to the state (authority) and loyalty to friendship. How is the tension of loyalty being represented in Puteri Gunung Ledang?

Ans:There is a tension which relates between Hang Tuah and Sultan. Due to Sultan's pressure, Hang Tuah was forced to leave his true love aside. Also, it caused conflict between Hang Tuah and Gusti Putri because of the tension.

11. Name two examples of the tension of loyalty in real Malaysian politics or history.

Ans:Firstly, Dr.Mahathir had put pressure on people who objected him by arresting them. Internal Security Act 1960 (ISA) is used by him to make sure his status stability. Beside this, Barisan National (BN), a Malaysia political group forced that other political groups cannot have promotion season except BN. This is tried to put pressure on other political groups which always making competitive with BN.

12. If you have to recommend this film to a friend who has not seen it, what would you say to him or her in about 50 words?

Ans:This movie is really nice to watch because the plots and setting are good. The story lines inside the film are very interesting compared to other Malay movies and it is easy to understand since the story is quite straight to the point.  If you not really understand in Malay, you can go and read the synopsis of the movie then watch the movie so you understand what the film tried to say.
